Climate change refers to the shift in global climate patterns due to human activity, such as burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. This is causing severe weather patterns that affect our environment, our economies and our communities.

South Africa is one of the world’s largest emitters of greenhouse gases per capita. The country’s energy system depends heavily on fossil fuels. As a signatory of the Paris Agreement, South Africa has made a pledge to reach peak emissions by 2020-2030, and start reducing them to an ambition of net-zero by 2050.
